The section of your Dissertation / Action Enquiry dealing with research procedures

Research Procedures

The section on research procedures must show:

  • the step by step process that you went through to collect and analyse the data.
  • your skills as a researcher and scholar (see MA criteria)

We need to be able to judge the appropriateness of the procedures and whether they will be reliable in portraying what happens.

We need you to show that you know what you are doing by reference to the literature on your procedures.

You need to show your research tool in the text. Your tool will probably be

a. questionnaire

b. a semi structured interview.

c. an observation schedule/ recording sheet

d. a research journal/critical incident collection.

Examples of tools can be found here

Let's start by discussing what makes a good question or a bad question?

Is it better to have a pre determined checklist of things to observe or just leave it open?

How are opinions best collected?

What biases might creep in through the procedures?

....but although small we have a strong element of tenacious researchers :)

can I begin the quations off here by inviting anyone to sicuss problems or issues that they have faced with this area and then tease out in a discussio how you plan to cover this in the 'write up'

Hi,

Unit 7 is pretty much straight forward I believe. I have more problems with unit 8 and 9; what is exaclty the difference between unit 7 "procedures for Data collection and their justification", unit 8 "methods of analysing the data and the justification", unit 9 "results and Evidence"? In the handbook the units 7 and 8 look similar but just use some different wording, I believe also some numbers are mixed up....Unit 9 is divided in 9a introduction and 9b tasks and discussion. Then unit 10 starts with 9a introduction again followed by 9b? And after unit 10 is another unit 10. ????? It is the handbook I downloaded for this section, diss/ac in cohort 2010. I am not sure anymore what to follow. I completed unit 7 'data collection and justification' now.

Hi,

I'm currently working on unit 10; Impact of the Action Research. The handbook states under 9A (shouldn't this be 10A???) Introduction that the section is broken down into four parts, but I can only find three; A Evaluate your research, C Strategies for Change and Improvement, and D the contribution of Action Research to School Improvement. Where can I find part 4?

Another question I have about the Qualitative data. Unit 9A states that this data may be shown in the form of appendices of data and cross referencing to the categories that emerged in the analysis...does this mean that it should be cross referencing with the data analysis in unit 8, or could I also refer in unit 10, under 'how strong is the evidence'? Because, in my research the Qualitative data is evaluating the Quantitative data.

Cheers,
Willem

I was looking through the module and the models. I wrote the procedures Unit 7 as a play format. and combined it with Unit 8 because it all seemed pertinent to put together.
I find the analysis difficult because most of my work was based on observation and reflection the patchwork model. I created survey and questionnaires but haven't gotten any results from them yet. Much of my data comes from the informal interview/discusions, observations, artefacts like minutes from meetings and performances etc. Do you have any ideas that could help me see the direction I am going. If I am on the right path?
thanks,
Jes

Hi Jessica,

Similar situation here. I have also swapped some units. I will use unit 1 as appendix, and start straight with unit 2. Then I will put unit 5 after unit 7. It reads more smoothly. I'am not sure if this is allowed though. I think there is nothing wrong with the qualitative data you have.

hang on in there...
