Conversation 9 A conversation about your impact section.

Essex Boats    Impact!

Impact can be on (adapted from Gusskey adapted from Kirkpatrick)

  • Knowledge gained by the researcher
    • Application of knowledge to practice.
    • Learning experiences of pupils
    • Learning outcomes of pupils.
Beyond this practical impact there is the impact as a postgraduate researcher.

This is the nub of the MA!

You said you were doing research!

So what can you generalise from your research to other researchers and practitioners?

Have a look at these executive summaries and see how clear their impact is stated and the generilisations made.

Common faults are to claim learning of what is obvious. As this is Masters level work saying you learned that "lesson planning is good" is hardly revealing! Saying it "confirmed the rersearch that"...... well that another matter. The tone of a research account is important.

Return to your conceptual model
Some people spend too much time on impact on their learning, and impact on pupils learning. Too little time is spent on gathering insights that may be useful to other researchers in the field. This is the point of postgraduate research, yet not enough time is spent on drawin g out these conclusions.

Be self critical

There should be a good section on self-evaluation of the research. the findings should be tentative. A big mistake is not to have a clear connection with the data- claiming more than you have revealed. Show the bias.

You will note a lot of this relates to the aims, methodology, and other earlier sections.

 Exercise

Please contribute some alternative words and phrases describing the following:

Summarising the issues and what you are trying to do

Sharing your findings

Debating the issues

Affirming what's known.

Contradicting and arguing

Changing (your ideas)

Suggesting alternative explanations

e.g "verifying"

These words and actions should be in your analysis

Hi everyone,

Sorry am I re-posting my comment here, as I am running behind on my project and have not commented for a long time. Just thought I would share my findings as I missed out on the previous conversation.

Any feedback would be appreciated! Am I the only one finding it extremely hard to teach full time and complete this MA project? I know it will be worth it in the end, but it's so pressurising!

It's has been such a long time since I wrote a comment! I am really falling behind on my MA Project. The only aspect I am struggling with is the Literature review, as there is so much information it is hard to narrow down the critical opinions!

I have now ran my project and I am please with the results; I have all my evidence that I need which includes: SEN data and interpreting this data into facts, observations of pupils when not in the classroom using ICT, I found they were more free to do things rather than being restricted in the classroom.
I also have evidence of interviews I conducted with the pupils before and after the course – you can really see the difference in the pupils, from beginning to end. I’ve also completed surveys, interviews, and focus groups, focusing on their feelings towards themselves and using ICT.
I am currently analysing the questionnaires – results so far indicate that students prefer the approach to positive thinking and raising self esteem – ICT has helped raise attainment in these pupils.
So I will have my results in my folder by next week, and hopefully within two/three weeks my literature review will be completed.
Ian/Alison I think I focused on too many books for my literature review, how many would you recommend? As a minimum I was thinking two authors, as well as journals and BETA website which has carried out research? Is this sufficient for the literature review?

hi saira, you sound all over the place like me. yes it is VERY tough doing the big juggle.
I have couple of potentially lame questions. This is for the dissertation.

Research methods we use and describe goes in the section ‘methods’ which togetherforms the entire section ‘methodology and reseach methods’. Straightforward I believe. This includes the methods we are using etc and why.
It then mentions here that "Methods" include data collection and analysis.

Please confirm if analysing the data ( the results, I would have thought) goes in this section, or the next-results, evidence etc. ( conversation 8).

Impact will come later on.

Im starting to panic that if I dont get the organistion of stuff together it will need a massive rewrite in december which I am not going to be able to do.

Also, ( asked this before) are we supposed to be writing the methods etc is the send that this is what I will do, not what I haev doen ( ie past tense)? I know these are lame questions but as I have done the data collection it sounds false.

I dont know about anybody else but regarding all the above, is there an idiot guide for assembling your dissertation -not the binding- Ive seen that- the actual body of it?? is there a set format?
Thanks

Hi Lisa I know what you mean I've been struggling with the same thing;what I will do and what I've done but I put some of the methods of analysis in the analysis section (what I did) but I wasn't sure if i should add that to the methods section or if it was ok as part of how I analysed the data that arrived. Am I making sense??Anyway, I'm nowhere near the impact section and really wish i was too. I'm wading through such a mass of quotes and evidence and struggling to cut it down and cannot decide on a structure or how to present this sort of qualitative data satisfactorily. I'm aware of 1/2 term in a couple of weeks and am stressed that i MUST crack this over that week as i won't have another stretch of time as doing a bit here and there doesn't seem to be getting me very far as the weeks go by. As i said before i hope its Ok to merge the evidence and discussion into one section as for the qaulitative data this seems to probably be the easiest way???I'm undecided.

There is no set format but you may look at the norm for others. Intro. Lit review, Methodology and Procedures (Methods) and Results. The gudie and the action enquiry guide has guidance.

Your narrative is to a research audience and not anyone. It should be written as an explanation of what you did and why before writing the report.

"Ian/Alison I think I focused on too many books for my literature review, how many would you recommend? As a minimum I was thinking two authors, as well as journals and BETA website which has carried out research? Is this sufficient for the literature review?"

A literature review is a reveiw of the literature published int eh field. You need to show your extensive and in depth knowledge. You can combine references to people saying teh same thing (eg terrell 2009, Gee 2008, Revill 2207 etc).

30 references are not excessive.

It depends on the topic and the quality fo the analysis. So if reviwed one great work well and analytically and evaluatively you could get away with it. Most opt for quantity. The only way to know is to show your tutors.

Thank you for the feedback Ian - will be posting some more stuff soon.

Does anyone know if there will be any meetings/lectures to attend?

One last thing, I would appreciate any feedback about my work that will help me improve upon it. I will have my Literature review uploaded within the next 2/3 weeks and the rest of the sections to follow. Please feel free to have a look and tell me what you think!

Good luck everybody, I am sure we will all get through it! :)

I am putting quotations from my interviews and questionnaire onto a grid. Do these words as "the evidence" count towards the overall word count?

Posted by Ian at Oct 20, 2009 07:38 AM
Word count word count.

Do you think I should start counting words? If you don't tell me I will not mention it unless it is so long and meandering and boring that I really have to. Then and only then will I multiply the pages by 300 and tell you that it's too long, meandering, boring etc.

Appendices are not counted. (But nither is weight)

It would be great if we were all full time students with not a care in the world but unfortunately that is not the reality. I hope that as practitioners this will be taken into account when the Action Research is marked? That against the odds, we are moving our institutions forwards in their thinking, in a small but positive way. I have done/am doing what I can do in the time I have available when I am not working full time. Some of the Research can be covered in day to day activities but not much is.

So my approach is not stressed, I go with the flow, planning and fitting in what I can, when I can.

Impact!

Still collating my evidence and then onto ‘Impact’. So far looks like most of the impact has been on me and not the students!

Will post comments in a couple of days.

Impact on whom?

Posted by Carol Jones at Oct 24, 2009 08:40 PM
Hi all

I would like my small scle study to have an impact on some of the organisations i've cited in my "who would be intersted?2 bit. Hopefully my findings will be of interest to those in ITE training. I've also been v critical of the whole mess which is Community cohesion, Sustainable schools and the 8 Key Concepts of the global dimension. I hae suggestions but who is going to listen? Can I state that I shall eb sending a summary to relevant organisations? Am I being too ambitious? It's certainly not giong to have an impact in my school as it's not particluarly relevant there. Of course it's having an impact on me...... and my practices but that's a given - although I shall state it. Any ideas?

Posted by Lisa Taner at Oct 26, 2009 11:36 AM
'the whole mess' eh? ...my results may well support this Carol.

Of course people will listen who have a vested or general interest Carol. I would suggest the following as a starter:
the DEA ( could do a thinkpiece)
DFID GSP team
other GD educators and providers (loads)
academics such as Doug Bourn, Andreotti et al through a contribution to the International Journal of Development Education and Global Learning, produced by the Dev Ed Research Centre at the IoE ( see Doug)
...thats the big folks, otherwise, your LEA and a summary for all participants to forward to somebody at their own LA??
Impact could be future impact, in your case, I believe.

For myself I think I have identified some people to disseminate to who may also therefore get some impact, but like Carol, it remains to be seen whether it has been ‘done’ already. Perhaps:
both LBs Haringey and Enfield-senior equalities/ CC persons and other senior officers or SIMs,
LA teams eg EMA,
all primary schools,
all particanpts
and ME of course, academically and professionally
( a caveat… impact on my family unfortunately not necessarily positive)

Impact on whom?

Hi Lisa, everyone
Thanks for helping me to think more outside the box! We are on the same wavelength and yes, I've put down Doug et al but maybe we all ought to be more ambitious about whom our potential audiences are. As it says in the MIDWHEB blurb and as Ian has told us, we are experts in our own small fields of study and so shouldn't be afraid to think more widely and more confidently about whom our study would be relevant for and who else out there could possibly gain/learn/profit from our experiences and analysis. Perhaps we are too timid and should be pushing the results to a bigger audience.

Hi - sorry got interrupted by my husband about rugby! Hadn't dared to think about a DEA think piece...... As far as your research is concerned...... What I also meant to say was that have you thought about the impact on other academics who are involved in CC - it would have an impact on their studies. Also what about teh sustainable schools lot and any ASTs or County advisers on this not just Enfield and Harringey.
As for impact on family - yes NOT always favourable but then I think all of us suffers in this way. Impact on my marking is also negative !!!Ho hum

Initial findings

Posted by Nasima Menni at Oct 31, 2009 05:17 PM
Hi All – its so comforting to hear some of your comments and how heavy its been. The same applies for me.

Hi Ian just to update you with things, Firstly many thanks for your detailed feedback on my email on the draft lit. review and will continue to improve on that. Please note it is way above the word limit for an action research module so I hope that this is ok?

I have been working on a number of units including, Unit 5 – exemplar material, Unit 6 – Methodology and Justification, Unit 7 – Methods of data collection and justification. I have not placed them on my account yet as I would like to continue working on those. One thing I have managed to complete is the sorting of the mass lot of data from the questionnaires, its been an overwhelming experience; coding, categorizing the responses, tabulating those on Microsoft excel, displaying the data into charts and diagrams. For the interviews I carried out content analysis – description of this is in my methods of data collection unit. I ll say again it has been an overwhelming task of getting through the mass data.

I was put in more pressure as my mentor wanted me to prepare a presentation for my initial findings of my research as she wanted me to present this to the whole school; teaching and non-teaching staff on training day – 23rd October.

I prepared a PowerPoint with 37 slides (!!) to present the findings (on how effective our schools behaviour policy is?). No I did not make commentary on the findings as I would have killed my audience off so I just put it in transition for everyone to see - it took 10 minutes to run the show.

I have to say it was a very important experience for me and the discussions that followed by the staff was most exhilarating – liberating; one of my colleague stated the discussions by everyone in the hall was ‘very heated’. I really felt what the books state in regards to how individuals in organizations are empowered by the findings of an action research.

Anyway its been a week since the presentation I am still feeling the impact. The school concluded by asking the whole staff if we need a new policy and everyone agreed the need for it and many ideas were shared. I will of-course push for a formal working party on my return as part of my research and see the process through – I hope.

I have placed the PowerPoint on my folder though have not yet decided how I will present it for my portfolio.

Nasima

Initial findings

Posted by Carol Jones at Nov 03, 2009 08:39 PM
I think your research sounds very exctiing Nasima and it's excellent the way your school are supporting you and showing interest howeve "heated"! You're certainly making an impact. I can remember when I gave an INSET that it was essential to my analsysis and "way forward" that I wrote down people's comments and reactions. I'd really recommend that you do this as it all adds to the rich data and people's c omments about your reseach can validate it. As far as adding the ppt to the portfolio - I included the slides with extra justification and comments - 2 to a page. HOwever, if you're at teh disertation stage, this might not be a ppropriate.
Hope you're managing the time management. I don't know how you're able to do so much with a young family. I could never have done that!

Good luck

Carol

Thanks Carol

Thanks Carol

The research is exciting and I am enjoying it, but it is challenging with my two little ones and the full time teaching and being deputy in the dept. I also supervise lunch duties five days a week (which I actually enjoy doing - free lunch and lots of money) So I have hardly any time.

As you may remember I am only in my first action research and I think you are in your final year? Do we need a bibliography for Methods of data collection section and the Methodology section or Is one bibliography in the lit review enough?

Nasima

Thanks Carol

Posted by Lisa Taner at Nov 06, 2009 05:58 PM
Hi Nasima,
When I did it I did one bibliography for the entire course. I also did a glossary as education is so choc full of acronyms- well done you on getting through it!
Lisa

bibliography

Posted by Carol Jones at Nov 06, 2009 10:58 PM
Hi Nasima
I've found, like Lisa that the usual practice is to just do one bibliography at the end. However, a reference list is different to a bibliography. References are those which you cite in your research and it's useful to list them separately (and in subject order if you have separate sections like..... Action Research, Global Citizenship ) etc. the bibliography lists books which you have read but haven't cited. Hope that's helpful. There is also a helpful section in the MIDWHEB guide about how to list using Harvard.

Still here (just)

I'm still working on analysing data which I collected in the summer. I've introduced a new tracking system which i've just spent 3 weeks doing intial baseline work on with the staff here, so I'm intrested in how that is doing (I'm learning a great deal from that) staff (I think) feel happier about it, the proof of the pudding will be in the data -which I'm trying to analyse and feedback to them to see if they find it helpful and ultimately the impact on the children-which is where I started from.A problem which I have is 'where to stop!'where do I stop collecting the data for the MA. Also what has become apparent as I've worked on this is the effective use of data I have a lovely Ruth Stanat quote 'Drowning in data-yet starved of information'

a lot to write up yet!

help- word count!!

Posted by Lisa Taner at Nov 16, 2009 11:51 PM
Hi Ian and all,
My word count, as at end of results including analysis of results, is approx 20,000 words- including all quotes- that's needs analysis, lit review, methodology and methods and results/analysis. This last section 'results and analysis' has not yet mentiomed impact - please could you give a guideline word count on impact section as I am obviously going to have to be cutting down ( or including stuff as appendices-not ideal.)
I read that ' Special dispensation is required if a written report exceeds 22,000 words. Projects of between 15,000 and 20,000 words are the norm.' So help needed asap please! How do I go about getting 'special dispensation' if neccessary?

Hi all

Trying to get all my work typed up and completed. Should be on here in the next two weeks - would appreciate any feedback!
Does anyone know if we have to attend any lectures? If so, when? Have not attended yet, but would like too.

Hi everyone,
I'm still on impact and final conclusion/abstract yet to do. Just about to tweek analysis a bit and then impact. Had to hold off on impact as presented my analysis findings to all the SENCOs this week and wanted their response. All very much agreed with the findings. The advisors want the findings e-mailed and will take them to the borough CAF leaders. Will do the e-mail next week but full impact will probably be into next year when I get feedback from borough - probably at next network meeting in the Spring term. Is that OK? My impact section will need to be quite short as I suspect I will also be very close to the 20,000 mark. Haven't got quite to the point of the final count yet though.Definitely getting a bit jittery about getting it all completed in time as other things impinging heavily on spare time now.I have put the references at the end of each section in the body of the text. Is it better to amalgamate them all and put the lot at the end in one section?

like the others, I'm still here & working away still collecting/ collating and analysing data. My research ended up being braoder than I anticipated and therefore have a variety of evidence basis. I am just about to start the impact section but I am still finding interesting articles/ thoughts etc linked to the literature review. One of key leanrning points for me must be to know when to stop- have I got enough information to make informed judgements?

Def not the time for introdcuing new literature unless you are really short.

You should be focusing on meeting the quality criteria of the MA level; descriptors in your module guide.
