Dear Stacey,
I have sent you two emails in response to your questions. The handbook explains what you have to do for this unit in the handbook on page 53 and 54, but it is just a planning section - so only 1000 words are needed. Where you ask in the last message above what you have to do for "Part 2: Planning Research Tasks" - this is just really a suggestion to you that you can look at the links/websites provided on page 55 to help you with understanding research methodology and how to carry out your data collection, etc.

I will now join up the discussion groups for the next units - it was really just so that you could get to know each other a bit more.

Have a look at the emails and then get back to me if you need to know more
Regards
Pauline

plan

Posted by Willem van der Sluis at May 07, 2009 06:36 AM
Hi girls,

Sorry for not responding a while. I am moving from Bangladesh to Dubai, this is causing a lot of stress and other planning and things and things...so no time for the study...but I will catch up.

Meanwhile I am still working here and next to that I gave a SEN lecture at the University of Dhaka; I will publish the program later.

As I attend an intensive ESL mainstream course, I want to choose 'ESL' as subject for my unit 2 planning. This is not a learning difficulty on itself, but in my point of view it creates learning difficulties. I have a lot of experience with DSL (Dutch Second Language) and now also with ESL in my SEN class. So for me it would be the perfect challenge.

Does anyone have ideas, suggestions or experiences about this subject to share? Possible here in the discussion or on my private email address: w1llem@yahoo.com

Thnx,

Willem van der Sluis

Jolly phonis programme is unelievable for children to learn their sounds and start reading. every letter is combined with its sound and an action. it is incredible how the action helps them to remember the sound. they will be reading in 3 weeks!!

I haven't found myself referencing a lot in this unit? anyone else have the same thing? Pauline - is this correct?

referencing for unit 2

Me too. I will have a closer look at the unit today....
I don;t understand 2a.
2b is quite to understand.

referencing for unit 2

Posted by Pauline Sumner at May 08, 2009 08:50 AM
I think it would be easier to understand if you think of Section 2a providing advice on the whole module (for this year) more (with the intention of helping you to plan what you will do in the whole module) and then 2b providing a format/framework for how to present your plan of the work you intend to do for the whole Module.
Hope this makes sense!

information

Posted by Halina Tucker at May 17, 2009 11:33 AM
Hi Willem, I have found some names of people who lecture/do presentation on EAL. If you google Sue Lee and/or Mark Penfold EAL, hopefully it will give you some information or contacts.

of course anyone can use this who is doing the EAL topic.
By the way I am looking for some statistical evidence regarding difficulties with Mathematics for student with SpLD or general population. So if anyone can suggest some sources I would be grateful.

Good luck. Halina

referencing for unit 2

Posted by Pauline Sumner at May 08, 2009 08:53 AM
Yes, I feel that you are correct Stacey, as this is the planning section it does not require so much referencing. HOwever, in point 3 of 2b it does require you to consider the authors/literature you intend to use in the next stage of the module - Unit 3

Unit 2

Posted by Pauline Sumner at May 08, 2009 09:10 AM
Just a reminder - Unit 2 is only a plan of what you intend to do in Unit 3 and therefore it is only 1000 words - so try to keep to the point and not make it more work by going over the word count!

Unit 2

Posted by Halina Tucker at May 10, 2009 12:28 PM
Hi Pauline, thank you for putting us all together, it is much easier to follow. The couple of things I have put in my folder are the sample of the plann I have done so far and a questionnaire as an evaluation of my work by the student I was working with. I would really appreciate your feedback on both as I need to consult my school and I am affraid that some of the questions might be leading questions.
The questionnaire is suppose to be the representation of 'student's voice'.

Type of research!!

Posted by Hyacinth Rose-Manners at May 15, 2009 09:52 PM
Pauline Ruth,
I think I need to discuss this here so all will benifit. Reading up methodology, someone tell me if I got it wrong. Research could be basic or applied.
Basic is to develop theory, essential in furthering our understanding of important phenomena.
Applied is to improve practice solving specific problems and applied is action research. Action research may utilize two approaches to inquiry: quantitative or qualitative. Qualitative could be ethnographic, case study, historical.
So my question is Qualitative historical and basic seem the same to me,what is the difference?
I have been reading 1. Action Research An Educational Leader's Guide to School Improvement by Jeffery Glanz 2003 and Research in Psychology Methods and Design by C. James Goodwin.

Type of research!! no one answered!!!

Hi Halina,

thanx for the advice. I will google it and maybe get some good contacts. However Pauline suggested me just to focus on SEN and not on ESL.....mmmm

The last 6 years I didn't teach Maths, only this year a grade 12 student. But learning difficulties with Maths....don't have a clue, sorry. Maybe you can teach me, because next year I will be doing maths too.
I hope you 'll find your way.

I am out (again) to Bangkok for a surgery and will be back at the end of next week. Then I will have a look at unit 3. It goes sooooo fast.....

Cheers from Dhaka,

Willem

Hi,

back online and in Dhaka. Surgery went well, thanks for your concerns.
And also back to study. I try to do as much as possible before the 19th of June, when I leave Dhaka for good and will settle in Dubai.

Any news/problems around unit 3 yet?

Cheers,

Hi,
I have done a lot of research, read more, tried to contact various specialists, contacted sites regarding copy right........so far, no reply from specialists or institutions and no replies regarding copyrights!!!!!

Am I the only one with these problems?

Willem, good to hear that all is well again with you. What have you decided regarding your topic? Are you going to contimue or are you going to find something within SEN?

I am jealous about Dubai........I loved it there.

Halina

Hi Willem

Posted by Willem van der Sluis at May 30, 2009 02:56 AM
Hi Halina,

no replies is anoying...I hope you will get in contact soon. At the moment no problems with that yet.

yeah...hm. I think I 'll change it slightly, and focus more on SEN....then I won't compare ESL with SEN, and the influence of English on skills...it is not that interesting anymore....but it makes it much easier.

Just ordered some literature and try to read more....like you do.

Hi Willem

Dear Willem,
Glad to hear that your surgery went well and hope your preparations for your move to Dubai are progressing - you must be very busy! As explained previously I am sure that there is useful research to be done on children with ESL but within the remit of this particular pathway whilst your work may include ESL you would need to have a key focus on Specific Learning Difficulties.
Good luck with the move!

Hi Willem

Posted by Pauline Sumner at Jun 01, 2009 12:42 AM
Dear Halina,
Sorry to hear you are having problems contacting specialists in the field - can you not get the information anywhere else instead of relying on them for their responses. I know it is good to get first hand information, but it often does prove difficult. What information about copyrights are you trying to get hold of? If it is to do with materials published on websites - there is often copyright information on pages on the site somewhere - is this the type of thing you mean?
All the best
Pauline

Hi Pauline

Posted by Halina Tucker at Jun 01, 2009 10:27 PM
Am I getting paranoid regarding copyright?
Yes Pauline, just to make sure that whatever quotes I intend to use in unit3 are legit. Do I need to worry about quoting from material found on internet and books? Obviously the essay is all my own work and analysis.

Getting responces from various sites is like getting blood from a stone!

Just on another note...........I have attended lectures by Patricia Barthorpe and would love to get in touch but find it impossible to find contact details. Can anyone help please?

Halina

Hi Pauline

Posted by Pauline Sumner at Jun 05, 2009 10:30 PM
Halina,
If you are quoting or paraphrasing published work/writings from either what you have read on the internet or from what you have read in books, etc. you are able to use it in academic work as long as you stay within the Harvard referencing guidelines - which are available on this website. Similarly if you have attended public lectures by Patricia Barthorpe, you can quote what she said as long as you make sure you reference it correctly - which would be to give the date of the conference, title of the conference and lecture etc. in your Reference list at the end.
Hope this helps
Pauline

How are we getting on with UNIT 3? I must admit that I think I have all the information but just tried to read in more detail the information and I am a bit confused.

Hi All,

It looks, Stacey, as if we two are the only ones here!
Like you I have gathered tones of material and now am trying to put it all together in some sort of coherent essay. Pauline, you have been of great help with your explanations in the last email. Hopefully it will be ok on the night, as they say.
What I find very slow is the referencing, bibliography and apendisis! But hey...........

Stacey, what is the topic you have chosen? Best of luck.

i am doing the need for withdrawing children with spld in small groups to gain confidence and get them to the right level. i always seem to feel like this coming to the deadline - that i have all the information but am confused how to put it together. don't know if im going to sleep tonight!!

confused?

Posted by Halina Tucker at Jul 10, 2009 05:33 PM
Hi Stacey,
Good luck with your essay, I hope you did get some sleep last night. I was so tired with writting, I just had to have a break. Went shopping, bought something I could not afford! but it recharged my batteries.

A good topic, it is amazing how many schools/teacher still have some problem understanding the concept that one-one or small group withdrawal can be of huge benefit to them and the children.

Don't you think that this MA is actually racing ahead and we just have 2 units left after this one?

confused?

Posted by Willem van der Sluis at Jul 12, 2009 10:54 AM
Hi Stacey, Halina and Pauline,

Stacey; interesting topic. I am very curious to the outcomes of your research. I agree with Halina that still teachers (and schools) have problems with understanding the benefits of it. Although I don't see these problems so much in The Netherlands (Steiner, Montessori, Jenaplan, Dalton) and in international education. I am not to sure, but to me it seems to be very common in the UK.

Yes the MA is racing ahead. Two units left. Does anyone knows the timelines of this study? What are the deadlines for unit 4 and 5?

At the moment I can't work on my unit 3. The 10th of June was my last lesson day. And the 1st of September will be my first on my new school. Then I will restart my research and working out unit 3.

Now I am in Greece, my permanent residence with my family, on the 14th of August I will go to Dubai. Where I hope to find my papers on time, as they are now on their way from Dhaka.

I wish you all the best with the new unit or finishing the 3rd. I try to come on line to check the discussions so now and then.

Please keep me informed about your progress and problems.

Cheers,

Willem

Out of interest I looked at your website and amazed to see how exciting your life is. I am a wife and mother to two children in West Country UK having moved from London!

I am interested to know how you are carrying on unit 3 after moving schools.

I am one unit ahead of you and I have reading your chats out of interest,

but I not sure when your deadline dates are although mine are shown on the front page.

Hi Pauline, I've been trying to catch up. I completed Unit 2 and sent it to you two weeks ago. I've read the requirements for unit 3 and these cannot be done until we return to school in September.

Catching up

Posted by Willem van der Sluis at Aug 12, 2009 02:06 AM
Marion, thanks for your message. I will start unit 3 as soon as I can, after starting work again. So I lost some time over the summer, and try to make it up between unit 4 and 5. Futher info, please e-mail me. w1llem@yahoo.com.

Sanjah, exactly, we can't do unit 3 at the moment. I am in the same situation as you. W 'll have to wait for the school start.

Feedback forms: yeah I think they mean Pauline's feedback. Just put it in your online folder. I did that anyway. And it is easier when busy with portfolio.

Tot ziens,

Willem

Hi Stacey, I have just finished my portfolio (september 09 start) and I put the executive summary you have shown above at the beginning - this is normal. However some where I also read that we needed one, so unit 3 and 4 have smaller versions - covering a summary and the main findings of that section. Whether these were needed or not it helped when I came to write my main one and became introductions to those sections.
Hope this helps, good luck with your portfolio. I am just about to start my dissertation - help!!

unit 4 guidance

Posted by Willem van der Sluis at Oct 18, 2009 10:46 AM
Hi all,

Is this thread still alive? How is unit 4 going....and what kind of subjects are preferable? For PD I give every Thursday a TA training for SEN Inclusion. I set up this SEN Inclusion program, and I want to have the TA's part of it, mainly for the differentiation and the in-class support. Could I use this as subject? For me it is receive and give PD.

Thanks,

How is everybody? We seems to have retreated into our shells of our individual topics. This makes it somewhat difficult to compare notes, so I hope all of you are OK.
I have completed unit 4 but have not yet had the feedback, so no idea how I have done!
I seems to have problems with referencing, bibliography and such! Any constructive suggestions would be much appreciated.
